Hiring a trainer is not required. Most clubs offer a free consultation, fitness assessment, orientation, free session - different clubs phrase it differently.

In that initial, optional session - based on the standards of the club, you will be introduced to the fitness area, some form of assessment will often be performed, and basic program fundamentals will be outlined for you.

Trainers will explain in further details the services that they offer, and how they may apply to you.

This appointment also allows you to ask any questions that you may have, and a chance to meet a trainer should you have questions in the future.

I've been in the business for 10 years and the above is a general outline of what most clubs/gyms offer.
References :
No, you don't need a trainer. Just be sure you are informed on basic form for weight training and know how to use the cardio machines. If you are, you should be fine.
References :
I don't think they are going to force you to do anything.
I think it would be all right for you to just go in and exercise as you please.

If they give you problems about it, then you've joined the wrong gym.
